23 June: United Nations Public Service Day

Every year on 23 June, United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated throughout the country to recognize the contribution of the government to public development and to appreciate the public servants around the world. Awards are distributed among public service officials to celebrate the significance of their role in the community.

From public safety and education to diplomacy and nonprofit administration, public services touch many areas of public interest. This is an event that celebrates the efforts of global heroes working towards the greater good of the people.

Significance of United Nations Public Service Day

The purpose of this event is to bring the community together to acknowledge the role of public officials in the betterment and development of communities. For this reason, public service awards are given to recognize innovation and excellence in community development. These awards are distributed among officials and institutes categorized into 5 groups based on their geographical regions: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Asia, Asia Pacific, and Eastern Europe.

To date, around 250 officials have received these awards for their public service efforts. United Nations Public Service Day focuses on promoting gender equality, improving healthcare, and addressing common social issues.

How is the Day Celebrated?

People take part in the celebrations to encourage the public service officials for the work they are doing and fuel future developments for the public good. It is not just the government officials, or social workers who are responsible for public service, every member of the society can play their part, in their capacity, to benefit the society. For instance, a doctor who is offering free consultations and medicines to less privileged patients is also contributing to the community.

This event also encourages young people to take part in public service and pursue public service jobs as full-time careers. The award ceremony has been hosted by different countries from around the world, including Seoul, The Hague, Marrakesh, Vienna, and New York City. This celebration actually makes you realize the significance of public services and what the world would look like without them.

History of United Nations Public Service Day

United Nations Public Service Day was first observed on 23 June 2003, and the UN General Assembly launched the Public Service Awards. They chose the 23 June date to celebrate the event because it is the same date when the Labor Relations Convention was adopted in 1978. With the development of municipal services, including gas and water, the idea of public services was first introduced. Over time, the scope of public service expanded to other domains as well. Now, the concept of public service has become so much broader, and we benefit from hundreds of public services.

Innovation and Future Developments

We are living in the digital era, and the past 10 years have totally changed the way we live, work and socialize. Digitization has not only made our lives fast-paced but also improved the public service sector for good. With the help of advanced technology, smart tools and methods are introduced to make the public service more accessible and efficient. Increasing public demands, advanced social issues, and limited resources are becoming a challenge for governments these days. Development and technological innovation is the only way to solve such problems.

Currently, there is a permanent difference in the way public servants are hired, trained, and perform their duties. Using advanced technology, we can improve the staff performance, do better monitoring of the outcomes, and make informed decisions. In the award ceremony, the awards are given to individuals contributing to making the public service tech-savvy, agile, data-driven, and more efficient.

What are the Criteria to Win the Awards?

As it is mentioned earlier based on the geographical locations around the world, the winners are chosen from 5 different groups. Anyone from all public organizations, national and local government, and public or private institutions, with a prominent contribution in any public service area, can win the award. Every year, the United Nations receives hundreds of submissions from all around the world. In the United Nations Public Service Awards in 2022, there is a special public service category added regarding innovation response and resilience to the pandemic to appreciate the efforts of institutions that remain active and responsive during times of crisis.

How Can Professional Localization Platforms Benefit LSPs?

There is a high demand for professional language service providers globally. Localization is becoming essential for brands that want to expand internationally. A lot of hard work and effort goes into translation and brand localization. LSPs need technical support to carry out their everyday business operation efficiently. LSPs need to join a professional localization platform that will fulfill their localization needs by streamlining the daily localization operations.

If you’re a language service provider working with businesses that have customers from around the world, you better have all the right tools to serve the diversified needs of your clients. You must carefully choose your translation management system and localization platform for managing the localization project. Read this article to know about the top benefits of using a professional localization platform.

Why Should LSPs Use Professional Localization Platforms?

There are many reasons why an LSP should work on a professional localization platform. Registering yourself with a reliable localization platform would improve your translation work efficiency and credibility. Following are some common benefits of using a professional localization management platform.

Streamlined Processes

Language services providers have to manage a large amount of translation and localization tasks regularly. Their workflow should be optimized to efficiently carry out everyday operations. Professional localization platforms allow their users to streamline their localization tasks and enhance their work competence. Instead of relying on manual operations management, automated workflows speed up your localization processes. Moreover, optimized workflows make your translation management hassle-free and faster.

Better Quality Translations

For the language service providers, it is very important to maintain a good quality of translations because their overall market reputation depends on it. Poorly translated content not just devastates your reputation but also makes the customers unsatisfied with the services. Providing high-quality translations is the only way LSPs can increase the customer base and revenue. Localization platforms offer machine translation tools to generate automated translations. One benefit of automated translations is that you can manage more content in less time without spending a lot of money. Moreover, the translation memory and glossary tools maintain the quality and consistency of machine translations.

Better User Management

Localization platforms not just provide you with a tool to manage resources and translations but also offer support for effective user management. Being a professional LSP, you have to manage people, including translators, editors, reviewers, developers, and remote freelancers. You must have a system in place that would allow you to assign localization tasks to your team members. Doing this would make it much easier for you to manage translation and localization tasks daily. You can define the roles and job responsibilities of each employee, and they can manage their tasks accordingly. Moreover, using such tools, you can get as many freelancers on board as you want. It would be much more hassle-free to manage remote employees through a localization platform.

File Management

Managing translation files could be a real hassle in translation management. Especially, when you are working on multiple projects with multiple clients, things can get complicated. In this scenario, manual file handling can make things even more complex which leads to frequent errors. A benefit of a professional localization management platform is that files can be managed automatically by machine tools to keep the whole translation operations optimized. This also ensures the effortless execution of daily translation processes with minimal errors.

Gain More Transparency

Project managers, who are working on multiple localization projects simultaneously, should have a system in place that allows them to get a clear view of the localization project. Working with a reliable translation management system allows them to get a clear picture of their localization project and where it is standing. Many localization platforms also provide regular progress reports that help you ensure that your project is heading in the right direction and there are no gaps in quality.

Moreover, having transparency also enables the project managers to make timely improvements to their localization projects to meet the clients’ expectations. Higher transparency also makes it easier for project managers to manage resources and employees. PM can keep track of all employees’ activities and performance; it also helps them provide honest feedback to the team members.

Quality Assurance Review

Before delivering the finalized translations and other localization outcomes to your clients, LSPs have to make sure that there are no errors. For this, you might have translators and proofreaders who eliminate the mistakes and optimize the quality of content. However, this process can be very time-consuming and hectic. To save your time, you better have a reliable quality assurance tool that would automatically uplift the quality of your translations. These systems detect and eliminate all grammatical, spelling, logical, and contextual errors.

Not all localization platforms use the same quality assurance processes. So based on your unique needs, you better inquire your service provider about the QA processes it follows to ensure high translation quality.

Save Time and Money

As we have discussed it is easier for that localization management platform to speed up your translation operations saving a lot of time and effort. Using such platforms, you can manage more work in relatively less time. Automated workflow ensures agile translation management that leads to higher work efficiency. Moreover, compared to human translators and coordinators, these platforms provide all of these services at much cheaper rates. LSPs can easily manage their localization operations without the need to hire an extensive number of employees. It enhances their cost-effectiveness by keeping the expenses in control.

Final Words!

To cope with the increasing demand for brand localization, it is high time for LSPs to look for ways and methods to manage high workloads more efficiently. LSPs can register themselves with a professional localization platform to smartly deal with day-to-day localization operations. MarsHub is a reliable localization platform that offers great value to language service providers working on several localization projects at the same time.
