Every year on 23 June, United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated throughout the country to recognize the contribution of the government to public development and to appreciate the public servants around the world. Awards are distributed among public service officials to celebrate the significance of their role in the community.
From public safety and education to diplomacy and nonprofit administration, public services touch many areas of public interest. This is an event that celebrates the efforts of global heroes working towards the greater good of the people.
Significance of United Nations Public Service Day
To date, around 250 officials have received these awards for their public service efforts. United Nations Public Service Day focuses on promoting gender equality, improving healthcare, and addressing common social issues.
How is the Day Celebrated?
People take part in the celebrations to encourage the public service officials for the work they are doing and fuel future developments for the public good. It is not just the government officials, or social workers who are responsible for public service, every member of the society can play their part, in their capacity, to benefit the society. For instance, a doctor who is offering free consultations and medicines to less privileged patients is also contributing to the community.
This event also encourages young people to take part in public service and pursue public service jobs as full-time careers. The award ceremony has been hosted by different countries from around the world, including Seoul, The Hague, Marrakesh, Vienna, and New York City. This celebration actually makes you realize the significance of public services and what the world would look like without them.
History of United Nations Public Service Day
United Nations Public Service Day was first observed on 23 June 2003, and the UN General Assembly launched the Public Service Awards. They chose the 23 June date to celebrate the event because it is the same date when the Labor Relations Convention was adopted in 1978. With the development of municipal services, including gas and water, the idea of public services was first introduced. Over time, the scope of public service expanded to other domains as well. Now, the concept of public service has become so much broader, and we benefit from hundreds of public services.
Innovation and Future Developments
We are living in the digital era, and the past 10 years have totally changed the way we live, work and socialize. Digitization has not only made our lives fast-paced but also improved the public service sector for good. With the help of advanced technology, smart tools and methods are introduced to make the public service more accessible and efficient. Increasing public demands, advanced social issues, and limited resources are becoming a challenge for governments these days. Development and technological innovation is the only way to solve such problems.
Currently, there is a permanent difference in the way public servants are hired, trained, and perform their duties. Using advanced technology, we can improve the staff performance, do better monitoring of the outcomes, and make informed decisions. In the award ceremony, the awards are given to individuals contributing to making the public service tech-savvy, agile, data-driven, and more efficient.
What are the Criteria to Win the Awards?
As it is mentioned earlier based on the geographical locations around the world, the winners are chosen from 5 different groups. Anyone from all public organizations, national and local government, and public or private institutions, with a prominent contribution in any public service area, can win the award. Every year, the United Nations receives hundreds of submissions from all around the world. In the United Nations Public Service Awards in 2022, there is a special public service category added regarding innovation response and resilience to the pandemic to appreciate the efforts of institutions that remain active and responsive during times of crisis.
